Nelson Minor Baseball is the big winner after receiving Capital Grants through the Community Gaming Grants (CGG) program that will assist with the revitalization of Queen Elizabeth Park in Fairview.

“The Nelson Baseball Association is well on their way to creating a rejuvenated baseball experience for players and fans alike,” said Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson.

“I’m excited to head down for a game when the renovations are complete. Local sports organizations keep our communities active and passionate, and I’m so grateful for their work.”

Anderson said the Capital Grants stream of the CGG supports not-for-profits and other community organizations to purchase, build, upgrade, or expand infrastructure that allows them to continue providing services or meet growing demand.

The Nelson Baseball Association is receiving over $47,000 to add a scoreboard, spectator bleachers, scorekeepers building and protective fencing.

This project was initiated in 2019 and work on the fence, netting, diamond, dugouts, field equipment building and batting and pitching complex were completed in 2021.

Nelson Baseball Association Treasurer Jim Sevigny said the BC Gaming Capital Project award was a matching grant which will allow Nelson Baseball to complete the scorekeepers building and repair the backstop in 2022.

The Capital Grants stream is providing over $5 million to 45 organizations across British Columbia for the 2021/22 fiscal year.

The capital projects program is part of the annual $140-million Community Gaming Grants program supporting about 5,000 community organizations that deliver arts and culture, sport, environment, public safety, human and social services, and parent advisory councils.

Sevigny said other major contributors to these tasks included the Regional District of Central Kootenay (Areas E, F, H, and I) and the Columbia Basin Trust.
