The talk that wasn’t given has been revived – thanks to technology.

Renowned author Tom Rand was to give public talks March 28 in Kaslo and Nelson to support his new book The Case for Climate Capitalism: Economic Solutions for a Planet in Crisis.

Then Covid-19 intervened and the presentations had to be cancelled.

Now thanks to the internet, anyone can hear and see his online talk on April 15th beginning at 9:30 a.m.

One of the topics that Rand will talk about is what might COVID teach us about the role of the public and private sectors in addressing systemic risks?

Rand is a green entrepreneur, investor, and public speaker. His new book explains how capitalism can be reclaimed to provide the critically needed response to the climate change crisis.

Rand’s first book Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World, published in 2009, was short-listed for the White Pine Award for non-fiction. His second book Waking the Frog: Solutions for our Climate Paralysis was published in 2014 by ECW Press and remained on the Globe & Mail’s Non-Fiction bestseller list for nine weeks.

The Case for Climate Capitalism was published on March 3.

Tom Rand will provide pragmatic, practical ideas on how to reform capitalism and align profits with the planet.

“It is an insult to our collective and historical intelligence to continue to ignore the warming climate and all its repercussions,” Rand says.

Political scientist Thomas Homer-Dixon says, “Rand doesn’t pick a side in the increasingly bitter fight over our responses to the crisis; instead he shows us how to solve it.”

Environmental activist Tzeporah Berman says, “This book forces the reader to abandon ideology, face climate disruption and wrestle with how to use existing systems to act fast and protect our kids. Challenging, compelling and smart, Tom Rand makes a clear case for a new radical but pragmatic approach to investment and policy in a world on fire.”

Rand is a managing partner at ArcTern Ventures, a senior advisor at the MaRS Discovery District, and sits on the board of a number of clean energy companies and organizations.

He also developed Planet Traveler, a low carbon hotel project in a renovated century-old building with solar panels and geothermal heating in downtown Toronto.

Rand holds a BSc in electrical engineering, an MSc in philosophy of science, and an MA and PhD in philosophy. He is an Action Canada Fellow.
