The Knights of Columbus have named Nelson native David Hogg as 2018 Citizen of the Year.

Hogg, the pipe major for the Kootenay Kiltie Band, has been a staple in the community for years, leading pipers in numerous events including Remembrance Day, Canada Day, High School Graduation Ceremonies as well as Navy Cadet inspection events.

“I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment but put this honour in the context of representing the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band for a few years, and during our 100th Anniversary,” Hogg, who has been playing the pipes since the age of six, told The Nelson Daily.

“I regard this not so much as a personal honour but as an honour to represent the many band members past and present,” he added.

“And, I must add that I am humbled to be thought in the same company as previous recipients of this prestigious award.”

Hogg joins a long list of recipients, including Susanne Raschdorf, Bill McDonnell, Lois Arnesen, Peter Defoe, Barry Nelson, Bruce Halstead, Allan Ramsden and Al Craft.

Hogg will be recognized during the Knights of Columbus Citizen of the Year banquet April 12 at St. Joseph’s School.

Doors open at 5 p.m.
