The Knights of Columbus have selected former Nelson City Councillor Susanne Raschdorf as 2016 Citizen of the Year.

Raschdorf follows 2015 recipient Barry Nelson as Citizen of the Year, which is co-sponsored by the Nelson Star.

“I think there are lots of people who could have received this award, but I’m very happy to have been selected,” Raschdorf told The Nelson Daily.

Since arriving in Canada in 1958, Raschdorf has been a constant contributor to the community, as volunteer with the Canadian Diabetic Association, Lady Lions Club, United Appeal, Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, Rotary Nelson Daybreak, Osprey Foundation and most recently Nelson Cares Society.

In 1979, Raschdorf, married to husband Klaus, was elected as Councillor to the City of Nelson, serving a two-year term in 1980-81. Her portfolios included the Electric Utility Department and the downtown Revitalization Project in addition to the Traffic Committee and Management Committee.

Raschdorf was also a Director with the Nelson and BC Credit Unions, chairing the Nelson Board in the 1970s.

Raschdorf also spent 11 years as a financial planner with Investors Group.

Raschdorf is the 52nd winner of the Knights of Columbus Citizen of the Year award.

Other winners include Peter Defoe won the award in 2014, Lois Arnesen in 2013, Arnesen’s Welcome Wagon colleague Frances Welwood, Bruce Halstead, Alan Ramsden, Al Craft, inaugural winner Helen Morris and 2011 winner Bill McDonnell.

Raschdorf will be honoured on Friday, April 8 at St. Joseph’s School at 6 p.m. Tickets, $35 before March 20 and $40 after that date, are available at the Nelson Star office.

The Knights of Columbus have been presenting the Citizen of the Year award for more than 50 years, recognizing individuals who have made all-round volunteer contributions to the community in recreation, civic service, youth work and/or religious activities.
