More than a dozen teams from as far away as Saskatoon will be in Nelson this weekend to compete in the seventh annual Disc Break Ultimate Frisbee tournament at the Lakeside Pitch.

The tournament, hosted by the Nelson Ultimate Frisbee Association, attracts teams from as far as Saskatoon, Edmonton, Missoula, and Seattle.

Disc Break 2018 will also function as the mixed Regional championships for the Alberta teams attending the Mixed Canadian Ultimate Championships in Surrey this August.

Several players who usually attend are unfortunately unable to come this year as they are currently and during the weekend playing in the World Ultimate Club Championships in Cincinnati (games available on the WFDF YouTube channel).

There will be a new champion this year with three-time defending champion Business Business not able to attend. The Bunny Thugs from Saskatoon, Rogue Hippo from Edmonton and Soggy Bottom Boys and Girls Club from Missoula are the top ranked teams going in but host Nelson and Spokane, the squad that has eliminated Nelson the last three years, have a good chance to break through.

The Disc Break 2018 comes on the heels of a very successful Grand Forks’ Settle Down Hat tournament in the Boundary City.

Prior to the event, 45 7-15-year-olds participated in the kids Ultimate frisbee camp.

Ultimate is a non-contact, self-refereed team sport played with a flying disc or frisbee. Two teams of seven players compete on a playing field about the same length as a football field, but narrower.  At each end of the playing field there is an end zone.  Each team defends one endzone. They score a goal if one of their players catches the disc in the opposite end zone.

Action goes Saturday with finals set for Sunday afternoon. All games are held at the Lakeside Fields on the Nelson waterfront.
