Reece Hunt and Team BC won a bronze medal at the National Women’s U18 Championship Sunday in Regina.

The Nelson Minor Hockey product and Team BC teammates defeated Ontario Blue 5-3 in the medal match.

Ontario Red defeated Team Quebec 4-1 in the Gold Medal Final.

Winning the bronze medal ties BC’s best ever finish at the National Women’s U18 Championship. BC previously won bronze at the 2005 edition of the tournament in Salmon Arm, BC.

Alex Allan (Abbotsford) led Team BC with a pair of goals with singles going to Allison Borrow (Penticton), Shay-Lee McConnell (Port Alberni) and Amy Potomak (Aldergrove) shorthanded.

Team BC led 2-1 after one period and 3-2 following 40 minutes of play.

Hunt, the lone player from the Kootenays to make the team, earned player of the game honours in Team BCs 9-1 loss in semifinal action to Ontario Red.

Hunt scored the lone goal for Team BC in the contest.

Team BC opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over Team Manitoba. After dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Team Quebec, Team BC advanced to the playoff round with a 3-1 victory over Team Alberta.

Hunt is the second Nelson Minor Hockey grad in handful of years to play for Team BC at the Women’s Under-18 Championship. Defenceman Aimee DiBella represented BC at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship in Saguenay, Que.

Hunt, the younger sister of Nelson Leafs forward Sawyer Hunt and American Hockey League Springfield Thunderbirds player Dryden Hunt, now returns to club team Kootenay Wild of the BC Female AAA Midget Hockey League.

In eight games with the Wild Hunt has scored one goal while registering six assists for seven points.

Kootenay Wild are currently tied for third in BCFMHL standings with eight points.

Kootenay returns to action Friday in Coquitlam with a weekend set against league-leading Greater Vancouver Comets.
