MLA Michelle Mungall is turning up the heat on the Liberal Government to end another of their poverty creating policies.

The Nelson/Creston MLA is encouraging citizens locally and across BC to sign a petition and write Christy Clark to end the maternity leave clawback.

Mungall said after 14 years the Liberal Government has been creating undue hardship for expecting and new parents by clawing back Maternity and Parental Leave benefits from families receiving disability and income assistance.

During the spring session of the Legislature, Mungall shared stories of families hurt by the policy and called on Christy Clark and her government to end the policy.

“The Premier responded with her tired political attack lines and self-promotions. BC Families deserve better than this,” said Mungall in a prepared statement.

“We need this government to take this issue seriously and do the right thing by ending the clawback of maternity leave benefits.”

Mungall has created a petition that can be signed at her community office in Nelson or online through her website.

She is also encouraging citizens to write the Premier and the Ministers of Finance and Social Development demanding an end to the clawback.

“Christy Clark cannot continue to ignore this issue,” said Mungall.

“Her government claims they put families first, but takes money from expecting parents to pay for tax cuts to the richest 2 percent.”

Mungall said BC continues to have embarrassingly high rates of poverty compared to other provinces, yet remains the only province without a poverty reduction plan. Ending another one of the Liberals’ terrible policies would help to reduce poverty for children and their families.
