Paced by team captain Sawyer Hunt, the Nelson Leafs ran its Kootenay International Junior Hockey League unbeaten streak to six games Saturday night in Sparwood.

Hunt, who currently leads the Leafs in scoring with 25 points, registered three points to lead Nelson to a 6-3 victory over Fernie Ghostriders.

Jack Karran, with a pair, Logan Wullum, Michael Bladon, David Sanchez and Jackson Zimmermann scored for Nelson as the visitors held period leads of 3-1 and 5-2.

Greg Susinski, Brendan Nemes and Jace Woodley replied for the Riders.

Sam Burford registered his fourth win of the season in goal for Nelson — the second in as many nights.

The game was played in Sparwood due to the ongoing investigation of an ammonia leak last month at the Fernie Memorial Arena.

A post on the City of Fernie Facebook page said RCMP are currently conducting their on-scene investigation at the Arena.

“While this is underway, RCMP have full control of the Arena and the City of Fernie and other agencies do not have any access to the facility,” the post said.

“Once the RCMP have concluded their on-scene investigation, WorksafeBC will take control of the Arena to conduct their investigation.”

Nelson’s win, combined with a Beaver Valley 4-2 loss to Kimberley Saturday in the East Kootenay, increases Nelson’s Murdoch Division lead to nine points.

The Leafs, 18-3-1-0-1, complete a six-game road trip away Friday in Grand Forks against the Border Bruins.

Nelson, the top team in the KIJHL, returns to the NDCC Arena Saturday to host Castlegar Rebels at 7 p.m.
