Over $25,000 in damage resulted after allegedly potential ignition sources left unattended caused a fire at 522 Cedar St. Sunday night.

No one was injured in the fire and the cause of the blaze — which does not appear suspicious — is still under investigation.

Around 6:50 p.m. Sunday evening the Nelson Fire Department — seven members and two engines — responded to a report of a house fire on Cedar Street. A call out was initiated for additional engine crew and the on duty crew responded.

The fire department arrived to find a single family dwelling with smoke showing, said NFD Capt. Mike Daloise.

“As more personnel arrived an interior attack was initiated to locate and extinguish the fire,” he said.

The fire was found to be burning near an exterior door in the house and had burned through the floor and a two-by-eight floor joist.

The fire was quickly brought under control and fire crews spent an additional hour ensuring that there were no hot spots or fire extension.

The fire department investigation team will conduct an examination over the next few days to determine cause.

The Nelson Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone not to leave potential ignition sources left unattended, said Capt. Daloise, and to check their smoke detectors this weekend in conjunction with the time change.
