Maloff, Peter

(September 27th, 2021)

Peter Third Maloff (Grandpa Pete/ Uncle) passed away happily and peacefully at home on Friday, Sept 3rd, 2021, at age 72 in Nelson BC. Peter was born at the Grace hospital in Nelson BC on June 13th, 1949, to Peter Sr and Tina (Shlakoff) Maloff.

Peter grew up in Thrums and spent much of his youth exploring and probably getting into lots of trouble in the region amidst a family of gardeners and hard workers.

Pete lived life passionately – he loved traveling and meeting new people. Over the years he went on many road trips with his granddaughters; he also went on Buddhist retreats all over North America. And in the last few years he loved telling us about his escapades.

Peter worked for Kootenay Society for Community Living in Castlegar for almost 30 years. He loved his work and his “guys”, and they adored him in return. It was always a celebrated event when it was Pete in the kitchen at Silverbirch.

Peter was humble and kind and always quick with a joke or a story. He was serious about growing Heritage tomatoes and reading Scandinavian mystery novels. He loved the music and poetry of Leonard Cohen and the poetry of Charles Bukowski.  Pete taught those who knew him by example – about acceptance of others and ourselves, about being amused by the foibles of ordinary folk, about being optimistic in the midst of cynicism.

Peter’s Buddhist practice was a very important part of his life. He was a dedicated member of the Shambala Centre in Nelson for 20 years where an intimate ceremony celebrated his life and sent him on his way.

Peter is survived by his brother Paul, nephew Carter and his sister Olga, nephews Tom, Mike (Leslie), Sean (Sarah) and niece Sara (Michael). He is also survived by his granddaughters Juniper and Alexis.
