Dr. William Reid

Dr. William (Bill) Malcolm Reid, aged 73, passed away peacefully and privately at home with his family on February 14, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; daughters, Sharla (Dave) and Sarah (Peter); sister, Heather (Chris); and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Matt and Isabel Reid, and his brother, Nick Reid.

Born in Scotland, he was the oldest of three children. The majority of his youth was spent in Lakefield, Ontario. He first attended Trent University, where he met his soulmate, Brenda, at the curling rink. Later, they attended Queen’s University together to become educators. Taking a leap together, they married in 1974 and embarked on a journey that spanned over 50 years—a union based on love, respect, and support for each other’s goals and dreams.

Brenda and Bill epitomized a philosophy of unwavering familial support, where each member’s goals were championed with shared commitment.  He actively participated in the family pursuits, from dance recitals to skipping competitions and Guiding events. He took immense pride in his family, Brenda, Sharla and Sarah, celebrating their accomplishments and supporting them in every endeavor they pursued. He welcomed his sons-in-law with open arms and fostered strong familial bonds through travel, communication, and gatherings.

Bill had an illustrious career as an educator, starting in Fort St. John and then moving to Nelson in 1987 to become Principal of LV Rogers High School. During his tenure, he adapted the Copernican Timetable for the BC system, vastly improving the school’s rankings while overseeing renovations. He initiated the International Student program, bringing the first international K-12 students to the district. Retiring as Superintendent of Schools in 2008, he transitioned into consulting, ministry roles, True Colors Master Trainer, and community work. Bill completed a Master’s Degree at Simon Fraser University and a PhD at Gonzaga University, and authored several books during his professional career.

His volunteer work included the Kootenay Festival of Arts, Senior Games, Nelson Police Board, Senior Centre, Broader Horizons and Nelson Police Foundation. He avidly supported local sports, particularly the Rhythm Ropers, the LVR Drag Race team, and Nelson Leafs.

Bill had a wide range of interests, including music, golf, curling, traveling (with a penchant for museums and government buildings), sailing, kayaking, woodworking, HAM radio, cars, trains, technology, and movies (both good and bad). He loved making and consuming candy, with a preference for Jelly Beans and Scottish treats. He was a proud Scotsman who infused his heritage into his family’s culture.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate doctors (especially Dr. Goodman), the Chemo team, and community home care and palliative care teams who provided exceptional care and support to Bill during his illness. Their dedication and kindness eased his journey and brought comfort to his loved ones. We are also deeply appreciative of the unwavering support and generosity shown by family, friends and neighbours during this difficult time. Your acts of kindness, whether through a comforting word, a homemade meal, or a simple gesture of presence, meant more than words can express. Thank you for surrounding us with love and support as we navigate this loss.

Dr. Reid’s celebration of life will be held on National Jelly Bean Day, April 22, 2024, at the Royal Canadian Legion in Nelson, BC, between 4 pm and 7 pm.
