Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world.

The excitement of pickleball has not gone unnoticed in the communities in and around the Heritage City, prompting the Nelson Pickleball Club to take matters into their own hands by raising funds to build an additional court at the Nelson Tennis Club, located above L.V. Rogers High School.

One of reasons why this club and these people work as well as we do is all our values are the same,” said Nelson Pickleball coach Tracy Bennet.

“Contributions and giving back to our community and being good stewards to the community are values we all have,” Bennet added.

Bennet said because of those values it was easy for the club to plan, organize and run a pickleball tournament in Nelson to assist in the building of another court at the tennis club.

“It was for us to be able to give back to the Nelson Tennis club that has given us so much and the community that has given us so much,” Bennet said.

“This is excellent news,” said Nelson Tennis Club president Keith Bridger, after receiving more than $3,500 from the Nelson Pickleball Club.

“The pickleball group is highly organized, and highly motivated and we are thrilled to receive these funds.”

Bennet said she is unsure how many current members there are in the Nelson Pickleball Club but mentioned that last winter more than 90 players joined the sport.

Pickleball, which can be played indoors and outdoors, was invented during the mid-1960s and resembles tennis and table tennis but court dimensions are different and is played with a wiffle ball.
