RDCK EOC warns public of High Streamflow Advisory for Southeast BC

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre said in a media release Saturday that the The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for streams in southeast BC.
The RDCK said this advisory affects the eastern and northern areas of region and includes the Duncan River and tributaries.
The RDCK said residents are advised to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high streamflow period.
“The RDCK Emergency Operations Centre reminds residents the risk of landslides is enhanced with the possibility of debris flow and rock fall during intense rainfall or rapid snowmelt,” the media release said.
“Residents should report landslides and floods to the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre by calling 1-800-663-3456.”
Chris Johnson, RDCK Manager of Community Sustainability said the recent events that have impacted the province during the past couple of weeks should made the public aware of what risks exist in and around their community.
“At this point, the best strategy is to stay informed by monitoring the local weather and current stream flows,” Johnson said.
Sunday morning, Environment Canada said the region can expect rainfall in the amount of 5 to 10 mm with the snow level lowering to 1700 meters during the evening.
