'You've won a new vehicle' scam making its rounds in Nelson
Nelson Police Department is warning the public about an old, but effective scam making its rounds in the community.
In a media release Thursday, Nelson Police said the scammer notifies the citizen they’ve won a new vehicle but needs prepaid funds to ship the automobile.
“NPD received notification earlier (Thursday) of a resident receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to be from Reader’s Digest and that the person had won a new vehicle which required payment for freight/shipping,” Nelson Police said.
“The caller (then) provided the resident numerous avenues for providing payment including bank transfer, purchasing gift cards or pre-paid credit cards (or) utilizing money wire transfers to make the payment.”
Nelson Police strongly encourages anybody receiving these telephone calls not to provide any personal information to the scammer.
Nelson Police said any members of the public unwittingly providing personal information or receiving deceptive telemarketing to please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
