Nelson Soccer trio shine on Canada West University circuit
A trio of Nelson Youth Soccer female players continue to thrive on the Women’s University circuit.
Maya Ida, Julia Burkart and Hanna Quinn all registered solid performances at the Canada West season opened on many fronts this past weekend.
Quinn, a keeper for University of Lethbridge, was outstanding between the pipes as the Pronghorns rallied from a 2-0 deficit to draw with University of Alberta Pandas Saturday in Edmonton.
The second-year Pronghorn keeper made six saves in the first half, including a pair of diving stops on Pandas chances from inside the box.
In total, Alberta fired 14 shots towards the Lethbridge net, compared to just four shots for the ‘Horns.
Sunday, Lethbridge played to a scoreless tie against MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton.
In Calgary, Burkart played well on the backline to power Thompson Rivers University to a 1-1 tie against former NYS teammate Maya Ida of University of Calgary Dinos.
TRU opened the scoring before the Dinos tied the game in the second half.
The Dinos are ranked in the top ten in the Canada West pre-season polls.
TRU opened the Canada West season Thursday with a 1-0 loss to University of Northern BC.
Thursday, in Calgary, Ida’s Dinos blanked University of BC/Okanagan 5-0.
U of C is back on the pitch Saturday in Saskatchewan against the University of Regina while TRU hosts MacEwan Griffins in the home opener Friday in Kamloops.
