The bikers are back.

The MS West Kootenay Challenge bikers, that is.

Rotary Lakeside Park is the home base this weekend for the annual ride to raise funds for the fight against Multiple sclerosis (MS) — an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain.

The event was rescheduled after smoke reduced the ride to one day only in 2018.

The ride, this Saturday and Sunday, begins through Nelson before riders trek toward Crescent Valley. The 82 kilometer trek on Day one returns to Nelson via 49 Creek Hill, a favourite among West Kootenay Challenge veterans.

After Saturday evening’s banquet at Rotary Lakeside Park, riders travel along Kootenay Lake Sunday morning en route to a ferry ride for a visit to Procter. Riders return via Long Beach Road on the 94 km trail before heading back to Nelson.

Leading the fundraising pack is The Rear Guard in the team category ($10,105) and Jim Noiles in the individual race ($6,250). The funds raised are 61 percent of the $105,000 goal.

More than 10 teams and 55 riders have registered for the two-day event.
