Nelson Police and Fire Rescue continue to investigate a brush fire at Queen Elizabeth Park Wednesday morning a media release said Thursday.

Fire Rescue received the report at 11:25 a.m. of a grass fire at the local baseball park at Fifth and Behnsen Streets in Fairview.

Fire Rescue said both on duty members responded immediately followed by one additional member responding to the scene.

“Upon arrival of the first crew, a slow-moving grass fire was observed on one of the banks of Queen Elizabeth Park,” the Fire Rescue release said.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to ensure that the onlookers were out of the smoke and to prevent the fire from getting any larger.”

Fire Rescue said a significant amount of darker smoke was given off of this fire due to the grass still being so green.

“Although there was tall green grass the underlying ground fuels were quite dry and promoted the fire spread,” the release said.

“The fire spread to approximately one hundred square meters before being completely extinguished.”

Fire Rescue said the fire appears to have originated near the mid-bank path and remains under investigation.

In all, three firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine and two utility vehicles. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone the ground fuels are drying out and to contact Nelson Fire and Rescue Services to arrange a free FireSmart Home Assessment.
