The 2019 Canada Winter Games recently wrapped up in Red Deer, but not before a second Nelson athlete stepped onto the podium to receive a medal.

Reece Hunt of Nelson won a bronze medal for Team BC in women’s hockey Saturday at the Servus Downtown Arena in Red Deer as Team BC shook off a heartbreaking overtime semi-final loss to edge Team Ontario 5-4 in Medal Round play.

It was the first women’s hockey medal at the Canada Games for Team BC since the province won bronze in 1991.

Earlier in the Canada Winter Games, Nelson Boxing Club’s Brayden Hellekson won a bronze representing Team BC in the 178-pound class.

Chanreet Bassi of Lake Country scored the game-winning goal to power Team BC to the bronze medal.

Team Alberta won the Gold Medal with a narrow 2-1 win over Team Quebec.

Hunt, who plays for the Okanagan Hockey Academy after playing her minor hockey in Nelson, finished the Games with a pair of assists in six games.

Hunt will conclude the season at the OHA before heading off for a full-ride scholarship to NCAA Division I Bemidji State University in Minnesota beginning in 2019-20.
