Two members of the Nelson Reflections will be front and center when the National Synchronized Swim Championship begin next week after the duet won a silver medal at the BC Championships held recently in Victoria.

Brooke and Ashley Sonnichsen won the silver medal at the Jean Peters Provincial Championships, and now represent BC at Canadian Espoir Artistic Swimming Championships May 29 to June 3.

“We are extremely proud of how the girls did,” said Reflections competitive head coach Brooke Madore. “This is their first year in competitive and they are doing so well.”

“All the girls will be going to the BC Summer Games and Brooke and Ashley Sonnichsen will be representing BC at Nationals May 29-June 3," Madore added.

Brooke captured the gold while Ashley won bronze in the 11-12 Age Group Figures. In 13-15 Division, Kaitlyn Fitchett won the silver, Cadence Hergott the bronze and Jessica Cockburn finished fifth. Hergott and Fitchett finished ninth in the Duet while the Reflections played seventh overall in Team Standings.

“(These results prove) we still have it,” Erin Fitchett of the Reflections explained. “We are a smaller club with big hearts and a lot of talent.”

Fitchett said a key to this success is the workmanship of the girls, which shows during competitions.

“The girls work hard and have fun at practice and see the results when they get to the competitions,” she said. “They are such an awesome group of girls. Us coaches are lucky to work with them.”

Fitchett said competition at Nationals is a huge achievement the Sonnichsen sisters. “(Brooke and Ashley) are a talented young duet with a bright future in our sport,” said Fitchett. “They are very excited to get the chance to swim alongside Canadas best. The whole club is proud of them and what they have accomplished.”

The Reflections Synchro Club has been around for decades. Currently the club has 21 swimmers, with 15 in the performance group and seven on the competitive team.

On June 2, the Reflections will host its annual Water Show at the NDCC Pool, beginning at 5:45 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
