Mallard's Team of the Week — West Kootenay Speed Skaters

The West Kootenay Speed Skating Club took a contingent of eight skaters to Kamloops this past weekend to compete at one of the largest short track events of the season. 

Teams from Williams Lake, Prince George, Richmond, Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm, West Kootenay, along with two from Kamloops, attended the event.

The West Kootenay group had three skaters over seven groups in Division one. 

Berand Platje placed first in group 1C, Mercedes Phillips placed first in group 1G and Ian Walgren, placed fifth in group 1G. 

In Division three, Luke Platje placed 4th in group 3A, Tristan Phillips placed first in group 3B and Oliver Ludwar placed second in group 3C. 

In Division four, June Platje placed second in group 4B and Charlie Ludwar placed third in group 4D.  All of the skaters posted multiple personal bests in the event.  Next up for all of the skaters is the Final meet of the season in Vernon, on February 10th

Mallard’s Source for sports would like to salute the West Kootenay Speed Skaters squad with Team of the Week honours.

The team includes, Coaches Bruce Walgren and Jessica Ludwar, Mercedes Phillips, Ian Walgren, Berand Platje, Tristan Phillips, Luke Platje, Oliver Ludwar, June Platje and Charlie Ludwar.

Berand Platje and Mercedes Phillips will be off to the BC Winter Games representing the Kootenay Zone in Speed Skating.  Ian Walgren is off to Port Coquitlum to compete in a Special Olympics meet on February 3rd and 4th.
