It was the battle of the Castlegar rinks as Deane Horning captured the overall title at the Annual Doug Bothamley Memorial Cashspiel Sunday at the Nelson Curling Centre.

Horning, lead Nicole Horning, second Mike McKenzie and third Susan McKenzie, defeated fellow Castlegar rink Bill Van Yzerloo to claim the A event title.

Horning defeated Myron Nichol of Castlegar in the semi-final while Van Yzerloo ousted Grand Fines of Trail to qualify for the final.

“We believe this is our most successful spiel yet and can see it growing to its capacity of 24 teams with this format next year,” said organizer Nando Salviulo.

“We believe our format is the main draw because there’s an opportunity for all level participants to win serious money.”

Other event winners included the Partridge rink from Fruitvale edging the Medford rink of Cranbrook for the B title; Bill King of Fruitvale capturing the C Event and Brent Pihowich of Nelson claiming the D Event.

Woody Wudkevich of Nelson won the E event.

Nichol won the Consolation A event, while 2016 winner Fred Thomson of Nelson took home the B event.

Qually of Cranbrook took the Consolation C event with the O’Connor rink of Creston claiming the D event and Beachamp of Trail the E event.

Total cash payout from this year’s event was $13,000.

“(The Doug Bothamley Memorial Cashspiel) has proven to be a great event for the city of nelson and for the Nelson Curling Center. It raises the profile of curling in hopes to attract more recreational curling in our region,” said Salviulo.
