Election nominations will soon be opened for a new school trustee to represent the Slocan Valley/Bonnington area.

The current trustee, Barb Lindsay, is leaving so that she may pursue a volunteer opportunity in Zanzibar. So a new trustee is needed to represent the interests of Regional District Central Kootenay electoral Area H, which includes Village of Slocan, Winlaw, Slocan Park, Crescent Valley and South Slocan.

The new trustee will also represent the interests of those in a portion of Area F, including Falls Creek and Bonnington.

Being a trustee is a rewarding volunteer opportunity. Melanie Joy, SD8 Board of Education chair, has been a board member for seven years. She is also the chair of the BC Public School Employers’ Association and a trustee for Creston.

“I chose to run for trustee because it was an opportunity to be involved in education and the learning of children as a parent and community member,” said Joy during an email interview.

“It is an exciting time to be involved in education. The time commitment is dependent largely on the individual but there are board, committee and community meetings that board members are expected to attend.”

Nominations are opened from 9 a.m. Tuesday, September 25 to Friday, October 5 at 4 p.m. Voting will take place on Saturday, November 10.

All nominees need to be Canadian citizens who are eligible to vote and have been a resident of BC for at least six months.

The new trustee will serve the remainder of the term that is being vacated by Lindsay. The next general election is scheduled in 2014.
