The first Remarkable Micro-Loan program in BC was issued and received in Nelson last week.

Sasha Trupp of Sashisha Accessories was chosen as the first recipient — her application was received just minutes after the program opened to the public.

Credit unions across British Columbia launched a revolutionary new micro-loan program to help young people kick start their future with micro-loans of up to $5,000.

Credit unions are also providing financial support and guidance to help repay the loan and build a solid credit history.

“This program is specifically designed for young people,” said Tom Atkins of the Nelson and District Credit Union. “The application is based on the quality of the idea, not the strength of a borrower’s bank balance.”

Recipients can have two years of interest only payments and a flexible repayment arrangement thereafter. Applicants are between 18 and 29 years old. More information and how to apply yourself, visit

“We’re honoured to be the first Credit Union to hand out a Be Remarkable micro-loan,” Atkins said.

“Sasha is a new member of ours and we couldn’t be happier to see this remarkable loan program support her and her business. Our community is fortunate to have many creative people; however, access to financing can sometimes be an obstacle.”

Trupp describes how she’ll be using the financing: “Most of the micro-loan will be spent on fees for festivals and tradeshows, the rest on raw materials.

“My accessories line will be a found at independent and handmade boutiques across Canada, as well as handmade niche trade shows.  I’ll be packing up my sewing machines and setting up a renegade sewing camp to keep myself busy between festivals.”

Trupp adds that you don’t need to wait until a festival comes your way to see what her company offers, you can also see and place orders for Sasha’s accessories at
