Stickel, Charles

Up near the Kaslo airport, on Saturday December 10th, 2011, at about the spot where a light plane would lift off, Charlie Stickel’s heart gave out and he died quickly with the final effort of cutting his Christmas tree. Charlie was 81 years old, a veteran of 2 heart bypasses, and he died as he lived, “making the most of it.”

Charlie, with his wife Mary as hygenist, ran a dental practice in Tillsonburg for 34 years. They then travelled for 3 years with the dental program of the Ontario Ministry of Health Underserviced Area. Charlie spent 7 years on the Tillsonburg school board, was a member of the power squadron, the United Church, a 53 year Mason and member of the Lodge of Perfection. Charlie loved flying and held a private pilot’s license in the 60′ and 70’s. He refabricated the wings of his Stinson plane which he flew with Mary. In 1990 they retired to Kaslo.

Charlie was predeceased by his son Jamie in 1976 and his brother John in 1979. Charlie is survived by his beloved Mary, his brother Jim(Norma), and sister-in-law Agnes, brother- in-law Don (Betty-Lou), Brother-in-law Duncan (Marg), his children Charlie(Joan), Shelley (Dan), Patty, grandchildren, David, Peter, Katie, Sarah, Helene, Kristopher, Adelaine and Nicola along with 6 great grandchildren, and honourary daughter Kathy Sinclair. All the Sinclair and Stickel nieces, nephews, cousins and family loved boating, fishing, flying, dancing, eating, chatting and laughing with Charlie. He was a wood carver, reader, and collector of a number of things – including precious dear friends. Thanks to all who blessed his life with love, support, laughter and friendship.
In lieu of flowers donation can be made in Charlie’s name to the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake, Box 661, Kaslo BC. V0G1M0
