 Nita Schoohoven (1943 – 2024)

After a courageous nine year battle with cancer, Angenita Jacomina Hendrika Schoonhoven (Nita) passed away peacefully in the Trail hospital on June 12, 2024 with her family at her side.

She was born in November 1943 in Assen, Netherlands. In March 1966 she married Henk Schoonhoven in Weesp, Netherlands, and a month later they immigrated to Canada with $100 in their pockets.

They started their Canadian adventure in Merritt, BC, and later moved to Kamloops. In 1971 they moved to Nelson and after 47 years, they moved to Castlegar in 2018.

Together, Nita and Henk started a family and built an incredible life in Canada with many friends and a successful family business.

Nita battled cancer like she approached life, with optimism and determination, and she always had a smile on her face.

Nita will be very missed by Henk, her husband of 58 years, her son Michael and partner Rose Iacullo, daughter Nancy and her husband Marty Johnson, grandchildren Ben and Jack Johnson, and many family and friends.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of the Kootenay Lake Hospital Oncology Clinic, Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail and the Castlegar and Community Health Centre for the care, warmth and kindness they showed Nita.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to your local hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.

A gathering will be held in Nelson at a later date, as well as a celebration of life in Thousand Palms, CA this winter.
