Johnson (nee Morton), Mary B.

The family of Mary B. Johnson (nee Morton) of Kaslo, B.C. is saddened to announce her passing on October 13, 2022, at the age of 97 years.
Mary is survived by her children, Darlene, Alvin (Marcie), Cathy (Rick) and Beth (Dave). Mary is lovingly remembered by 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Ole Johnson, her brothers (Cecil, George, Frank and Art Morton), and her parents Annie Elizabeth and Robert Morton.
Mary was born in Sandon on July 30, 1925. She moved to Kaslo in 1934 as a child. Over her many years in Kaslo, she became a pillar of the community and was presented the Citizen of the Year Award in 1998. Mary served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII from 1943 to 1945. Following that, she graduated as a registered nurse from Toronto Western Hospital in 1949.

Her nursing career included service in Slocan Community Hospital, New Denver, before coming to the Kaslo Victorian Hospital in 1960. In Kaslo, she worked for nearly 20 years as a nurse and later as hospital administrator. Mary loved gardening, baking bread, and fiber crafts including spinning, weaving, knitting and crocheting. She was an active church member since 1934, serving as an ordained priest for St. Mark’s Anglican Church from 1995 to 2001.
A memorial service will be held November 26, 2022, 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Kaslo, followed by a reception at St. Andrew’s United Church (Heritage Hall) from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
As Mary was a lifetime member of the Victorian Hospital Auxiliary of Kaslo, in lieu of flowers, donations to the VHKAS, Box 607, Kaslo B.C, VOG 1M0, would be gratefully appreciated.
The family would like to recognize the kindness and care of the staff at the Victorian Community Long Term Care Center of Kaslo, as well as the team at the Emergency Department of Kootenay Lake District Hospital in Nelson, B.C.
