Audrey Dorene Phillips
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Audrey Dorene Phillips. Audrey, beloved wife of the late Matthew A. Phillips, passed away peacefully May 7, 2011 at the age of 83.
Audrey was born in Kenora, Ontario on April 30, 1928. She was born to Bertha E. Joynt and Lyle Wilfred Todd. As a young child she moved to Oak Lake, Manitoba where she grew up and met the love of her life. Audrey married Matthew A. Phillips on February 7, 1946 and moved to Bissett, Manitoba where she gave birth to five children. In November 1957, Matthew and Audrey moved to Nelson, British Columbia where she gave birth to four more children and resided for the remainder of her life.
Audrey enjoyed her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse working at Mount St. Francis hospital beginning in 1967. Audrey took great pride in being the driving force behind the initiation of the nurses union at Mount St. Francis. In 1983, Audrey retired from nursing to care for her husband.
Audrey was a loved and involved member of her community. Audrey served on Nelson’s city council as a Senior Representative, volunteered at the Legion, numerous schools and on the Hospital Auxillary, and brought about the installation of the traffic light on Front Street and Poplar Street.
Audrey is survived by seven of her nine children; Todd (Linda) Phillips, Keith (Lori) Phillips, Shari (David) Platt, Kirk (Luzie) Phillips, Cameron (Linn) Phillips, Kimberlee Phillips (Denny Williams), Shawn Phillips and her grandchildren; Jason, Luke, Matthew, Scott, Stephanie, Stacey (Matthew), Ashley (Rory), Dallas (Melanie), Christina, Trenton, Melanie, Sarah (Michael), and Brandy (Jonathan) and great-grandchildren; Lochlyn, Kyla, Sullivan, Brooke, and Pheonix. She is also survived by her brother Clarence Todd, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her parents Bertha and Lyle Todd, her husband Matthew A. Phillips, her son Kelly Phillips, her daughter Tracy Phillips, and her sister June Davis.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Service Ltd. Memorial Service will be held at the Thompson Funeral Home 613 Ward St, Nelson BC on Friday May 13, 2011 at 1:00 the service will be officiated by Robin Borrows. The family wishes to thank the many friends she met along the way and the staff and residence of Lakeview Village for being helpful and kind to our Mom.
