Re: Change of Date for Rotating Strike Action

Further to my letter of May 20th, I am writing today to advise you that the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation has changed the date on which SD8 (Kootenay Lake) Teachers will be withdrawing fully from their services.
The day for the full withdrawal of service in SD8 has been changed from May 29 as indicated in the BCTF’s original press release, to May 28.

It is my understanding that this change has been made because of a miscommunication between the BCTF Executive Committee and their Field Services.

Apparently there was a concern that BCTF Representatives travelling to the Representative Assembly from remote districts would need part of Thursday for travel, and shouldn’t be outside of their districts when teachers were involved in the full withdrawal of services.

I am also advised that there may be more changes. Please watch our website closely.

Therefore we ask that you not send your children to school on Wednesday, May 28th.

Thursday, May 29th will be a regular school day, and on Friday, May 30th there will be no school for all students as it is a Planning Day for the 2014-2015 school year.

Kootenay Lake School District Superintendent address upcoming BCTF strike action

To the SD8 (Kootenay Lake) Community

RE: BCTF Strike Action

On April 22nd I informed you that members of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation were commencing strike action effective April 23rd. As you know, teachers across the Province have been withdrawing many administrative services since that time.

Although negotiations between the BC Public School Employer’s Association (as the representative of the Ministry of Education) and the BC Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) have continued, the parties have not reached a settlement.

We have now been informed that in addition to the withdrawal of administrative and many volunteer services normally performed by Teachers, the members of the BCTF will fully remove services on a rotating basis throughout the Province.

As part of this action, Teachers in SD8 (Kootenay Lake) will participate in a full
withdrawal of service on Thursday, May 29, 2014. Please do not send your children to school on that day. Because we will not be able to accommodate students in our schools, no transportation services will be provided that day.

The following day, Friday, May 30th is a scheduled School Planning Day and therefore classes will not be in session. Schools will open again on Monday, June 2, 2014.

Please watch our website or updates regarding the BCTF Strike Action.
