Spokane Women’s Hockey proved to be poor hosts as the squad dumped the Nelson Blueliners 4-1 in the final of the Hoctoberfest Tournament held recently in the Lilac City.

Karen Duffy was the only Blueliner to score in the contest as the defending champs from Canada fell short of its bit to repeat. Gerri Stillwell was busy in the nets as Spokane peppered the Nelson goal for most of the contest.

The Blueliners opened the tournament with a 4-1 decision over the Spokane Comets. Team captain Loreli Dawson, Debbie Morris, Daiva Villa and Chelsea Mathieson scored for the winners.

Nelson then played to a 1-1 draw against the Portland Cougars in what tournament officials called “the best game” of the weekend.

Duffy scored the only goal for Nelson while Natalie Smith replied for the Cougars. Stillwell was on top of her game to keep the Blueliners in the contest.

In the final round robin game, Nelson received goals from four different players to double Vernon Vixens 4-2. Genevieve Lachance, Morris, Justine Thielker and Villa scored for Nelson.

Finishing on top of the division, Nelson managed to advance to the final by stopping Trail/Rossland Chicks with Sticks 5-3.

Deb Morris paced the Blueliner attack with a pair of goals. Duffy, Villa and Lachance added singles. Marnie Audia scored twice for Trail/Rossland with Kayla Martin adding a single.

Next up for the Blueliners is the Kaslo Damsels and Dragons tournament November 20-21 in the North Kootenay City. Nelson is the defending champ.
