The Nelson Daily transitions to Castanet: a new era of local journalism begins

September 27th, 2024

Castanet Media is launching a new edition for Nelson, B.C., the first step in an expansion into the West Kootenays.

Castanet, the B.C. Interior’s leading news and information platform offering reliable and timely coverage for over two decades, took ownership of the Nelson Daily on Sept. 1 with plans to open a brick-and-mortar newsroom in the downtown of the community soon.  This transition promises to enhance community-focused journalism while retaining the local essence that readers have come to expect.

Castanet’s news coverage in Nelson will be led by Tim Schafer, a familiar face in local journalism who helped launch the Nelson Daily 14 years ago with Bruce Fuhr and Peter Sheets.

“I’m excited to be covering our vibrant community, telling local stories that matter to Nelson,” said Schafer. “With newsrooms closing across the country, I’m looking forward to joining a growing organization dedicated to local news.”

If you have a story idea or suggestion you can reach Tim at timothy@castanet.net

The Nelson Daily’s website will be redirected to Castanet Nelson on Oct. 1.  Work is underway on an archive to preserve the rich history of local journalism done under the Nelson Daily banner.

Bruce and Deb Fuhr will remain on board to help with the transition through the rest of the year.

“We’re looking forward to Castanet taking over and us moving on — looking forward to Castanet’s on-top-of coverage in the Kootenays,” Bruce said.

Joining Schafer is GeoLyn Mantei, serving as general sales manager. A longtime resident of Nelson, GeoLyn brings extensive media and marketing experience, having previously run her own publication before going to a global stage. She’s now thrilled to return to her roots and strengthen community ties while supporting local businesses and organizations.

“We are committed to providing a platform that highlights the vibrant spirit of Nelson while actively supporting local businesses and organizations, promoting local events, and connecting readers with content that matters most.” Mantei says.

Castanet launched in 2000 and has since grown to include offices in Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton, Osoyoos, Salmon Arm.

Nelson will become Castanet’s seventh newsroom with plans for additional expansion in Trail and Castlegar.
