Local opposition to the Hallō Nelson project continues to grow as an online petition gathers names of those looking to prevent the multi-million dollar project from taking shape in the Heritage city.

Called HellNō Hallō, stop the Hallō Nelson development — housing for all, not for the few — located through change.org — people who oppose the proposed development around Granite Pointe Golf Club can voice their sentiments.

With over 1,200 signatures since the petition started on Sept. 13, momentum is growing as the petition set a goal of 1,500 signatures.

“At a time when our community faces a severe housing crisis, with many struggling to find affordable shelter, we find it unacceptable for this land to be used for luxury developments of second and third homes for the ultra-wealthy,” the petition read. We are vehemently opposed to the developers’ plans to fly people here in private jets when our region is still under a cloud of wildfire smoke caused by the current climate crisis.”

The wording of the petition characterized it as “out of touch with the values and culture of our community” and ignored the housing needs of Nelsonites in favour of profits.

Ultimately, the petition will be delivered to City council, the municipal body that approved development of the land around the golf course in 2018.

High-end project

Hallō Nelson will offer more than 300 residential units and The Dodger, the first Troon-managed — a luxury gold course management company — golf course in Canada.

Construction of the first stage of the community in Rosemont will begin in 2024 with 24 fully furnished, curated townhomes on the first fairway of the golf course, including a 25-metre heated pool, gym, tennis and art pavilion.

Subsequent stages include residences, boutique lodging, restaurants, retail and outdoor ice skating.

Hallō Nelson will be built on the current Granite Pointe Golf Course in the Rosemont neighbourhood following a purchase agreement between Hallō Properties and the Granite Pointe Golf Society in 2023.
