Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the Nelson Cares building at 805 Nelson Avenue suffered water damage to the second floor following a kitchen fire Tuesday afternoon.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said responded to the fire call at 3:28 p.m. Tuesday to Lakeside Place, with Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief and seven firefighters attending.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the first crew observed that the fire alarm was activated with most of the occupants evacuating the building.

“The fire crew made their way to the second floor and made entry into the suite,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

“The sprinkler system was active in the kitchen area and extinguished a fire that started on the stove.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said fire crews remained on the scene to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and to assist with cleanup.

The fire damage was contained to one suite. However, water from the sprinklers cause damage to the building floors below the fire suite.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said along with the firefighting staff, two fire engines and one command vehicle attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is currently under investigation,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to offer some cooking safety tips:

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.
  • Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire, such as oven mitts or wooden utensils, away from your stovetop.
  • Avoid loose clothing while cooking. Loose clothing can brush heating elements and easily catch fire.
