Nelson Police boost security for BC Premier's visit to Heritage City

Providing security for the BC Premier, tree fire, well-being check and fraud were just some of the 173 calls for service officers responded to during the past week Nelson Police said in a media release Tuesday.

BC Premier David Eby, guest of Kootenay Central MLA Brittny Anderson, spoke during a Town Hall at the former Central School gymnasium last week.

Nelson Police provided security outside the gymnasium as well as two undercover officers watched the crowd of 200 people inside the building listen Premier Eby answer questions spectators as well as members of the local media.

“There were no issues at the meeting,” Nelson Police said.

Premier Eby was on a tour of the Southern Interior, moving onto the south Okanagan after his visit to the Heritage City.

Officers extinguish fire from tree stump

Nelson Police said on August 14, officers were quick to extinguish a fire that had been started on a tree stump and left to burn.

Nelson Police said the responding officer was able to mostly put out the fire using the fire extinguisher in police cruiser before Nelson Fire arrived to soak down the area.

“Due to the quick response time of emergency services, no structures were damaged and the fire did not get out of control,” Nelson Police said.

“We would like to thank the public for calling the fire in so that it didn’t have time to spread.”

Elderly woman safely located 

Nelson Police said on August 15, dispatch was contacted by a shelter in Cranbrook, who informed the department that an elderly female had never returned after a trip to Nelson

The shelter was concerned for woman’s wellbeing.

“This was a high priority case and officers began working to track her movements after she arrived in Nelson,” Nelson Police said.

“Fortunately, she returned safe and well to Cranbrook and the case was able to be closed.”

Bank manager alerts NPD of possible fraud

Nelson Police said on August 16, a local bank manager alerted the department of a possible fraud.

The bank manager told NPD that the victim, who is over 90 years old, had been told by a caller that her SIN number had been compromised and that she needed to pay $15,000 in cash to correct it.

“Fortunately, bank staff questioned the withdrawal of such a large amount of money and were able to prevent the fraud before it occurred,” Nelson Police said.

“Police escorted the victim home and are still investigating.”

Nelson Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant against fraud and neever give out personal details over the phone or email, and never send money to someone you haven’t met.

“If something seems suspicious, contact police immediately,” Nelson Police said.

Members of the Nelson Police Department responded to 173 calls for service in the City of Nelson during this reporting period (August 11th, 2024, at 6 a.m. to August 17th, 2024, at 6 a.m.).
