UPDATED: Nelson Police open investigation into hedge fire behind Panago Pizza

Nelson Police said Thursday officers have opened an investigation into a fire that was started between 5-5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, behind Panago Pizza at 216 Anderson Street.

Nelson Police said fortunately, the fire quickly spotted and extinguished by Nelson Fire and Rescue Services before flames had time to cause serious damage.

“We are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event or have video to contact us,” said Nelson Police, who released images of the individual seen in the area around the time of the fire.

Nelson Police is asking the person, or anyone with information, to please come forward.

“We are hopeful that this individual may have information that will help the investigation,” Nelson Police said.

Nelson Fire responds to morning hedge fire in Lower Fairview

The sound of sirens rang through silence of an early morning in the Heritage City as Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to a hedge fire in lower Fairview Tuesday morning.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release that the call came in at 5:30 a.m. with both on-duty personnel and seven  off-duty members being called in from home to respond to the fire at the rear of the property at 216 Anderson Street.

“Upon reaching the scene, the first crew encountered a large hedge that was on fire, and witnessed neighbors attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

“The primary objective was to safeguard nearby buildings and limit the fire’s growth.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said crews were able to gain control of the fire quickly with staff remaining on scene for an hour checking for hot spots, and ensuring the fire was completely extinguished.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said a total of nine firefighters participated in the incident, utilizing two fire engines and one command vehicle.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that campfires, including fires in fire pits, and fireworks are not permitted in the city limits.
