UPDATED: Man remanded into custody in relation to three deliberately set fires in Nelson

Nelson Police said a Nelson man has been remanded into custody following a court appearance for Arson charges.

Nelson Police said that David Lloyd Travis has been charged with one count of arson in connection in an ongoing investigation into three deliberately set fires, including one fire inside Gyro Park, that occurred on July 24th, 2024 inside the City of Nelson.

Nelson Police said that Travis has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court via video conference on August 7th, 2024.

Nelson Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community.

“We continue to investigate these incidents actively and appreciate the public’s cooperation and support,” Nelson Police said in a media release.

Nelson man charged with arson in connection with recent fire in Heritage City

Nelson Police said a local resident has been charged following a string of fires started in the city Wednesday evening.

In a media release, Nelson Police said that the BC Prosecution Service has approved one count of Arson against Nelson resident, David Travis.

“This charge follows a diligent investigation by our officers, and we are committed to continuing this investigation as additional charges may be forthcoming,” Nelson Police said in a media release Friday.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the members of the public whose timely information and cooperation led to the swift apprehension of Mr. Travis.”

Nelson Police said the collaborative effort between the community and the department underscores the importance of public involvement in maintaining safety and security.

Nelson Police said that Mr. Travis remains in custody, with his next hearing scheduled for Monday, July 29.

Suspect arrested after alleged arsons at Gyro Park, Front Street

A suspect remains in custody following reports of numerous fires Wednesday evening, including a wildfire at Gyro Park, Nelson Police said in a media release.

Nelson Police said that officers and members of Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to reports of a fire happening inside Gyro Park on Wednesday at 6:22 p.m.

The fire quickly spread with Nelson Fire and Rescue Services calling in a helicopter to bucket water onto the blaze on the west side of the Gyro Park pool.

Nelson Police said that additional fires were reported in the 1000 block of Front Street before the suspect was arrested.

Nelson Police said that there is no further risk to public safety.

To assist with the arson investigation, Nelson Police is requesting public’s assistance in locating any CCTV or dashcam video within the area shown between the times of 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24th

Prior to the Gyro Park fire, at 3:51 p.m., Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fire report at the Nelson Coin Laundry & Carwash.

Crews arrived to see thick smoke coming from the laundromat area.

“The incident commander confirmed with a staff member at the scene that the building had been evacuated,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services media release said.

“The staff member also advised that a dryer was on fire in the laundromat.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said firefighters set up for a fire attack and extinguished the fire that was burning inside one of the dryers.

“Thankfully the fire did not extend past the dryer, however, the building did suffer some smoke and water damage.,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

In all, 11 firefighters and 1 Chief Officer responded to the incident with two fire engines, one ladder truck, and one utility vehicle. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Wildfire at Gyro Park in Nelson

There’s a wildfire burning at Gyro Park in Nelson.

Few details are available at this time but a helicopter could be seen dropping water on the fire and smoke could be seen from throughout the city.
