Nelson's Canada Day activities attracts crowds to Rotary Lakeside Park
Cooler weather, but many warm smiles highlighted Canada Day in the Heritage City as Nelsonites joined in with Canadians across the country to celebrate birthday 157 Monday at Rotary Lakeside Park.
The cooler than normal summer day began with sunshine at the Nelson Lions Club Pancake Breakfast before Canada Day celebrations moved to the Rotary Lakeside Park for ceremonies.
Nelson Chamber president Karen Bennett was joined by Nelson Mayor Janice Morrison and Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson for Canada Day reflections before the program shifted to a Community Drum Circle.
A large contingent from the audience with drums circled the main drum circle, singing and drumming along with the main drum circle.
After the singing of the O Canada, the scene quickly shifted over to the large-sized cake complete with icing shaped in Canadian Flag.
Local politicians joined Chamber members to carved out delicious pieces for the public.
The Nelson Electric Tramway, offering free rides throughout the day compliments of the Nelson and District Credit Union, was a hit a patrons lineup for a ride along the Nelson waterfront.
Entertainment from various groups charmed the public throughout the day at the stage near the flagpole before fireworks — staged by the Nelson Professional Firefighters Association — that could be seen throughout Nelson, concluded the day’s events.
