Nelson Selects capture pair of Provincial B Soccer Championships

The Nelson Soccer Association is known for being a powerhouse in the Kootenay Region.

That notoriety just increased to the provincial stage.

Nelson Select Teams won not one, but three medals — two of the golden variety — at the BC Soccer Provincial B Cup this past weekend in Kamloops.

The U15 and U17 girls played solid soccer en route to winning the gold medals in their respective divisions.

The Nelson Selects came so close to making it three gold medals, dropping a 2-0 decision in the final of the U15 Boys Championships to finish with a silver medal.

The Nelson Selects edged host Kamloops Blaze 3-2 in the final to capture the U15 Girls Championships.

“(This) was a massive accomplishment,” said a U15 Team spokesperson.

“We are very proud of these players.”

Nelson, finishing with a 2-1 record, edged out Kelowna United on goal differential to claim Pool B.

The Nelson U15 Selects are coached by Cheryl Dowden and Jennifer Moynes.

The players include, Shelby Allen, Keira Badry, Maria Beninger, Olive Bliss, Aili Brackett, Wendy Caldwell, Isabelle Christison, Emme Evenson, Naiya Gaynor, Liv Hedges, Hailey Hutt, Elysha Keyserlingk, Piper Kuran-Dowden, Jaime Moynes, Lydia Ringheim, Sasha Ronan, Virginia Tait and Kjerstin Turner.

In the U17 Girls Final, Nelson Selects posted a 2-0 shutout of Gorge Purves to claim the Provincial B Crown.

The U17 Selects finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, including a 3-0 mark during round robin action. In three games during Pool A action, Nelson scored seven goals and allowed only one marker.

The U17 Selects also won the BC Soccer Fair Play Award.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Selects U15 Boys saw their bid for a Provincial B Championship fall short, losing 2-0 to host Kamloops Blaze while the U18 Boys lost in the Bronze Medal final.
