The heat (or the power outage) couldn’t keep folks away from the Nelson Community Food Centre to share a delicious meal among friends. The Nelson Community Food Centre (NCFC) team hosted their seasonal Community Dinner on Tuesday, July 9th; with neighbours and friends celebrating access to, and importance of, good food for all.

More than 50 people sat down to chat with friends and make some new ones over a meal served by the NCFC volunteers.

The room had been lovingly decorated by the NCFC staff with beautiful flowers donated by Aster and Bliss.

Multiple restaurants generously supported this event including the Tandoori Indian Grill, Broken Hill, Yum Son, Marzanos, and Red Light Ramen. The NCFC kitchen team also created some yummy dishes to pair with the donated ones, crafting a menu that was delicious and completely nutritious.

Due to various social and economic factors, many people in our community do not have sufficient resources to provide food for themselves and their families. The Nelson Community Food Centre is here to bridge that gap.

The Centre runs multiple barrier-free programs including the ‘Reaching Home Nutrition Program’ which delivers food boxes to low-income seniors facing barriers like transportation, medical or physical concerns.

The No-Cook Program, a project that was conceived by the Nelson Committee on Homelessness (NCOH) through Nelson CARES Society and delivered by the Nelson Community Food Centre and Street Outreach – Nelson Community Services.

The No – Cook program was initiated to address food security for individuals precariously housed in motels with limited access to a kitchen or cooking supplies.

And of course, the ‘Good Food Bank’ is a bi-weekly program that runs year-round on Wednesdays from 1 — 4 p.m. in the main hall of the Nelson Community Food Centre.

The Good Food Bank is open to any person facing adversity, or is primarily low-income, in Nelson and the surrounding area.
