The Trail & District Arts Council, Triple Threat Experience, and STEPS Dance Centre will fill the streets of Trail with the smell of rebellion from July 20 to 21 as the musical theatre camp students invade The Bailey Theatre stage to perform Roald Dahl’s “Matilda The Musical JR.”

Rebellion is high in “Matilda JR.”, a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence… and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

“Matilda JR.” is being performed by participants in the 3-week Triple Threat Summer Intensive program, and is adapted from the Olivier and Tony award winning musical, which is based on the beloved book “Matilda” by Roald Dahl.

The Triple Threat Experience cast contains approximately 42 students directed by Juliana Marko, with musical direction by Lise Levesque and choreography by Nadine Tremblay.

To prepare for the show, young performers aged 8-18 years old are trained in acting, singing and dancing before performing in a full scale musical theatre production before a live audience.

Drew Cohen, president and CEO of Music Theatre International, who licenses the show, says, “One of my favorite moments early on in the show is when Matilda sings, ‘Even if you are little you can do a lot’. It’s such a powerful reminder for each of us, tall and small, to take ownership in how we can create our reality,…Through the process of putting on this musical, these students are doing just that: they are joining together and working hard to create this extraordinary event for their community. We think they deserve a standing ovation for all their work.”

Roald Dahl’s “Matilda The Musical JR.” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond.

Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, “Matilda JR.” is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

The Triple Threat Experience students will put on performances on July 20 at 3 p.m. & 7 p.m. and July 21 at 3 p.m. at The Bailey Theatre.

Tickets are $15 for youth 12 and under and $20 for everyone 13+.
