Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to a grass fire near Tuesday afternoon the intersection of Government Road and Highway 3A.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said that at 3:35 p.m., crews were called to the fire on the elevated bank by the intersection with three on-duty and one additional firefighter from home, responding.

“Upon arrival of the first crew, a smouldering ground fire, 3 meters by 3 meters, was observed,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services media release said.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to secure a means of getting water to the fire, and then limiting the fire’s growth. Crews encountered some difficulty running a hose line to the elevated area, but rapidly extinguished the fire once access was secured.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the fire appears to have originated from an abandoned fire pit, but the cause remains under investigation.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services four firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine and one tender truck.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that campfires, including fires in fire pits, are not permitted in the city limits.
