The Nelson Rod and Gun Club is joining with B.C. Wildlife Federation to host a Fishing Forever event at part of Family Fishing Weekend from June 14-16 throughout the province on Father’s Day weekend.

The dates in Nelson are at Cottonwood Lake on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16 — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nelson organizers said that Saturday is for seniors, disabled, shut ins with each participant to be accompanied by a caregiver.

Sunday – Father’s Day – fishing is reserved for children under or around the age of 15.

Both days, participants receive a burger or hotdog, and a drink with those catching fish the chance of winning a rod/reel set or medal.

BCWF member clubs welcome families and novice anglers to free fishing events across B.C.

Family Fishing Weekend is an opportunity to tackle fishing for the first time or indulge in a lifelong passion.

B.C. Wildlife Federation member clubs are hosting family-friendly events all over British Columbia in partnership with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C.

From Cowichan to Kootenay Lake, experienced anglers will be on hand to help you bait a hook, tie your first lure and drop a line in the water at a lake brimming with fish.

More than 800 lakes and rivers in B.C. are stocked with fish each year using license dollars to support angling.

No license is required.

On the third weekend in June anyone who has lived in Canada for the past 12 months can fish in fresh water for free, without buying a license. Fisheries and Oceans Canada also offers opportunities to fish in saltwater.

Family Fishing Weekend events often include family barbeques, fly-tying clinics, free rod and tackle loans, children’s fishing clinics, and stream clean-up projects.
