When 92-year-old Nelson resident Gene Mauriello was born, Bob Gourley of Manitoba was on top of the Curling World having captured the Brier Tankard.

Mauriello doesn’t remember Gourley, but he does know his way around a sheet of curling ice having spent most of his life playing the sport.

“Curling is a great non-contact sport, very interesting and rewarding when you make a great delivery with your curling stone,” says Mauriello.

The curling enthusiast gets his social and exercise needs met through the low-impact sport.

There is lots of exercise from sweeping and getting to know the different players you meet,” says Mauriello.

Mauriello enjoys the sport so much he is taking his show on the road after the Nelson Curling Club was forced to close this past season due to expensive repairs that were needed at the local facility.

He hopes that area residents will see what a great sport curling is and the importance of Nelson having a local curling facility.
