Kootenay River edges LVR top spots at Kootenay Classic Tournament

Bomber teams came close, but had to settle for second place finishes at the Kootenay Classic High School Basketball Tournament Saturday at the L.V. Rogers Hangar in Nelson.

Kootenay River spoiled the victory celebrations by capturing top spots in both Girls and Boys sides of the tournament draw, sponsored by SMT Lawyers in Nelson and Nelson Dairy Queen.

Kootenay River edged LVR 57-37 in the Boys Final Saturday, jumping out to a early lead before coasting to the victory.

Levi Konkin led the  Bombers in the feisty affair, finishing the game with 19 points. Carter Janssen and Albie Drysdale each added six points for LVR.

LVR opened the six-team Boys tournament with a 64-47 win over J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks of Trail Friday afternoon.

The Bombers won the three-team pool by outlasting Mount Baker Wild of Cranbrook 64-56.

Meanwhile, Kootenay River blasted Grand Forks Wolves 103-72 before edging Stanley Humphries of Castlegar 88-73.

In the Girls Draw, LVR opened the tourney with a 58-25 decision over Nakusp in the four-team round robin draw.

The Bombers lost 47-31 to Grand Forks before finishing the tournament with a 43-35 win over Kootenay River.

Three teams — LVR, Grand Forks and Kootenay River — all finished the tournament with 2-1 records. However, Kootenay River was awarded the title on points aggregate.

Bomber teams return to action this week with the LVR Senior Girls hosting Grand Forks at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Hangar.

LVR Senior Bombers travel to West Kelowna Thursday to compete in the Mount Boucherie Tournament while the Junior Bombers venture east to Cranbrook Friday to compete in the Mount Baker event.
