Dawson, Stephenson and Lawczynski earn KIJHL 'Three Stars' of the week

Nelson Leafs forward Crae Dawson has been selected one of the Hudl Instat Kootenay International Junior Hockey League 3 Stars of the Week.

Dawson, joins Kimberley’s Trey Stephenson and Ethan Lawczynski of Castlegar Rebels as the trio of KIJHL stars.

The Osoyoos product collected six assists in two games as the Leafs lost to Grand Forks 8-6 before rebounding to defeat rival Castlegar 1-0 in overtime Saturday in the Sunflower City.

Dawson had five assists against Grand Forks and started the play leading to Ty Nykyforuk’s OT winner. Dawson has 13 points in 15 games for the Leafs this season.

Meanwhile, the Nitros defenceman Stephenson registered a goal and three assists to help the Dynamiters win both its games on the weekend. Stephenson had four points in their 7-0 win over Summerland, then was plus-two in their 6-0 win against Creston Valley. Stephenson has 10 points in 19 games for the Dynamiters this season.

Rebel netminder Lawczynski earned Top Goalie honours in leading Castlegar to a 2-1 shootout win over Beaver Valley, then a 1-0 OT loss to Nelson.

Against the Nitehawks, Lawczynski stopped 40 of 41 shots, then 32 of 33 shots against the Leafs.

The 6’4 ” 185-pound goalie had a 0.96 goals against average and a .973 save percentage in the two games combined.

The Leafs return to action with a double-header weekend of home games at the NDCC Arena.

Friday, Nelson meets Grand Forks Border Bruins before facing Spokane Braves Saturday. Puck drop for both games is 7 p.m.

Sunday, Nelson travels to Fruitvale to face Murdoch rival Beaver Valley in a 2 p.m. contest.
