Deadline for Heritage Award is extended to November 4th

October 31st, 2023

The City of Nelson is now accepting applications and nominations until November 4th for its annual Heritage Award which honours individuals, businesses or organizations who have made an outstanding contribution towards the preservation and/or promotion of Nelson’s heritage.

The winner, who will receive an $1000 honorarium, will be announced at the City’s Annual Reception in December.

“Heritage is so much more than old buildings,” says Heritage Working Group Chair Berdine Jonker.

“It is the tangible and intangible threads that connect all people, places, and times in this community, from time immemorial to the present, and into the future. Heritage speaks to the aesthetic, historic, cultural, spiritual, natural, and social qualities that make Nelson unique. The people who work to conserve our collective heritage understand the importance of connecting stories, places, and history, and how that contributes to the enrichment and sustainability of the place we call home. Nelson has such a strong foundation of heritage conservation to be proud of, and the heritage award is an important acknowledgement of those who understand that there are always more heritage stories to be understood and shared, places to be conserved, and cultures and traditions to be honoured and celebrated in our city.”

The City’s Heritage Working Group established this award to recognize and publicly appreciate individuals, groups, businesses, or other organizations who have demonstrated leadership in heritage restoration, renewal, or promotion, and to acknowledge the contribution heritage makes to the City of Nelson’s vitality, well-being, and identity.

Previous recipients include the Nelson Electric Tramway Society, Nelson CARES Society for their restoration of Ward Street Place, Touchstones Nelson, Joern Wingender, Peter Bartl, Greg Scott, Cartolina, and the Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce.

Deadline for submissions is November 4th.
