Richard Carver winner Ellen Burt 'overwhelmed' to receive award
Local writer Ellen Burt was “overwhelmed” and “incredulous” to learn she won the 2023 Richard Carver Award for Emerging Writers.
Each year, one writer is chosen for this honour locally and awarded a cash prize.
Burt, who has authored two memoirs and is releasing a third, says nature is a theme woven throughout her writing. Her most recent memoir is a portrait of her Quaker childhood in the northwestern United States.
Burt has written on and off for her entire life and finds great support for her craft in the Nelson community. She also volunteers with the Nelson Poetry Slam.
Richard Carver was a lover of the arts and the Kootenays, and he was invested in the community as well as a mover and shaker on the board of the Nelson and District Arts Council, the primary sponsor of this award named in his honour.
