On August 20, the forest fire smoke got in our eyes — and noses and lungs — and we had to postpone the first ever Nelson Sunday Town Square for health reasons.

But we have regrouped and this event will now take place on Sunday October 1, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., with the 500 block of Baker Street (between Ward and Josephine Streets) closed to motor vehicle traffic to become a temporary town square for people to use and experience.

The public are invited to come downtown to enjoy music, play games, and take part in arts and other activities. Bring lawn chairs, games, a book to read—whatever you’d like to spend time doing, as you relax and mingle in our pop-up town square.

Town squares are the traditional heart of a city, and for centuries have been an integral part of human settlements and play a significant role in enhancing community life.

Residents of Nelson and area are invited to come and imagine what a town square or park situated in the heart of downtown Nelson could look and feel like.

There will also be opportunities to speak with others around topics such as the Official Community Plan, better public transportation, and how we could explore making parts of downtown Nelson more pedestrian friendly — an idea that surfaced very strongly in recent community input around public space in Nelson.

Join your community in making our Sunday Town Square an enjoyable and successful experience for everyone.

Everyone is encouraged to walk or bike to the event where possible.
