The Capitol Theatre has run its unique Summer Youth Education and Mentorship program for 35 years.

This year’s program is in full swing, with preparations underway for Matilda the Musical.

The professionally produced show is gearing up to be a visually and musically stunning experience for audience members.

Director Heather Shippit says, this is a really huge opportunity for students to experience what it’s like to work in professional theatre.

“It’s not just about the show; it’s about the passion, career opportunities, and the training students get,” Shippit  said.

The program has an impressive track record of alums moving on to successful careers in the arts.

The Capitol Theatre Summer Youth Education and Mentorship program has produced quite a high number of theatre, musical theatre and music talent.

“In the past, we’ve had students go directly to the National Theatre School straight out of little old Nelson or down to a studio in Vancouver. There are lots of successful transitions from this program,” says Shippit.

Matilda the Musical opens Thursday and runs through Sunday at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson.
