Water Quality Advisory for City of Nelson

Interior Health, in consultation with the City of Nelson, has issued a Water Quality Advisory for the water distribution system within the City Boundary.
The media release said the Advisory is due to spring run-off conditions that, from ongoing testing, indicates an increased level of turbidity or suspended matter in the drinking water supply.
While our water is consumable, the Interior Health Authority recommends that people with compromised immune systems or anyone seeking additional protection should take precautions when drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or brushing their teeth.
The City of Nelson is working closely with the Interior Health Authority to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, please take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones.

What happened? Why now?
Nelson’s water supply is some of the best in the world, comprised of four snow-fed watersheds above the city. But when it gets too hot too quickly, that snow turns to water and comes down the mountain quickly, bringing sediment with it.

Yes, the treatment system is still operating but getting overwhelmed by the increasing amount of suspended sediment.
