Cooling Centres open Wednesday in Nelson
As Environment Canada calls for warmer temperatures, and B.C. institutes Heat Alerts in the region when there are two or more days with temperatures over 35C during the day, and the nighttime low is 18C or more, Cooling Centres will open in Nelson starting Wednesday, July 27.
City Cooling Centre during the current Heat Warning include:
- Nelson Curling Club, 302 Cedar Street: 12:00-8 p.m. on Wednesday July 27, Thursday July 28, Friday July 29, and Saturday July 30
For people who are at risk due to homelessness, extended hours are provided at the services below.
- Coordinated Access HUB/Nelson CARES, 521 Vernon Street: 12:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday July 27, Thursday July 28, Friday July 29 (may be extended as possible)
- Stepping Stones Emergency Shelter/Nelson CARES: Limited capacity drop-in, working with the Coordinated Access HUB
- Salvation Army, 601 Vernon Street: 12:00 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday July 27, Thursday July 28, Friday July 29 (may be extended as possible)
The community is urged to check on friends, family and community members who may be vulnerable.
Those people are encouraged to come to cooling centres, or cool off at other places (e.g. library, shopping mall, seniors’ centres etc.)
